If you’re a longtime follower of this blog, you know that we love sculpture that is big, bold and immediate. And honestly, if we were asked to highlight one work that best exemplifies this, it would be Cai Guo-Qiang’s Head On (2006). Despite being a few years old, Cai’s site specific installation remains so remarkable that- in our opinion- nothing has really topped it since. Born in China, Cai was originally trained in stage design, and later in his career began to utilize social issues as the conceptual basis of his work. Head On utilized 99 replica wolves that were organized in a pack and arranged so as to suggest they were hurling themselves at an ‘invisible’ wall (which was fabricated out of glass).
